In a city where burgers are serious business, there are an equally serious number of burger joints. But where are the best for the hungry traveler? Let’s take a look.
Sobelman’s
This place consistently ranks among the top places – or even the top place – to grab a burger in Milwaukee. Why? Well, it could be something to do with the cost atmosphere, great drinks and great service. It could be the tempting menu, which includes plenty of other options as well as a variety of burgers. Or it could be the Sobelman Burger itself – delicious Angus beef on a perfectly proportioned bun, with all the trimmings (jalapenos, cheeses, fried onion) and cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor and texture. Oh, Sobelman’s is great value too.
Solly’s Grille
This place is pretty famous in town and out of town as well. Famous for the Butter Burger and ranked amongst the ten best burgers in America by USA Today in 2011, the accolades and praise just keep rolling in. The butter adds a whole new level of exquisiteness and texture, and the menu includes a great range of burgers, including veggie burgers, hamburgers, patty melts and Glendale burgers. Finish it off with a hot fudge sundae or slice of homemade blueberry pie.
Elsa’s on the Park
Elsa’s is an up-market burger joint. Delicious, custom blended burgers are served up on toasted Italian rolls and washed down with an enticing cocktail. The atmosphere is elegant and the menu equally so. Take your pick from burger au plover (sautéed in a burgundy sauce), APV burger II (with crumbled Bleu cheese) or burger las brisas (with Monterey Jack cheese, avocado and jalapenos). Or opt for a lighter touch with the Greek maiden burger (marinated in white wine) or the Daisy Mae burger (with fresh cucumber and lemon dressing). Other fare includes seared rare tuna in teriyaki sauce, shrimp ceviche and a selection of hearty sandwiches.
AJ Bombers
Kitschy, fun and award-winning AJ Bombers pride themselves on their fresh ingredients and homemade sides, as well as their welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Try out the great appetizers including buffalo chicken eggrolls and Wisconsin cheddar cheese curds, or move straight on to the main draw – burgers include organic, grass-fed beef burgers, stuffed Portobello mushroom burgers, homemade black bean burgers and the barrie burger with peanut butter. Wash it down with a bloody bomber – AJ Bombers’ secret bloody mary recipe.
Stack’d Burger Bar
Get your fix at this well-loved establishment, where the burgers come with an assurance of quality. The beef is high quality and grass-fed, while other ingredients are locally sourced and produced where possible. Stack’d pride themselves on being a local burger bar for the community (visitors are welcome, of course!). Attention to quality is what it’s all about, and the menu reflects that. Click here and choose from a tempting choice of starters and then build your own burger – choose your protein, followed by your cheese (including vegan), trimmings, buns (including gluten free) and sides. Burgers are cooked to order. You can also choose from a variety of imaginatively named specialty burgers, such as don’t mess with Texas and kick-in-the-pants burger. We’ll let you guess at their ingredients.
Once you’ve had your fill of burgers it’s time to check out the local area. Car hire in America is the best way to discover Milwaukee, so get your wheels and head out to Bradford Beach, Lakeshore State Park or one of the other great natural areas. There are more than burgers to Milwaukee after all!
